The kagu is a flightless bird endemic to New Caledonia — it is the only surviving member of its entire family Rhynochetidae
It has unique 'nasal corns' — no other bird species has these nostril coverings, giving the kagu one of the most advanced senses of smell among birds
Despite being unable to fly, the kagu has fully developed wings it uses for dramatic threat displays and balancing while running through the forest
Known as 'cagou' locally, it is the national bird of New Caledonia and appears on the territory's coat of arms and banknotes
They form monogamous pairs that share chick-rearing duties and maintain the same territory for many years
